Today I saw a pic of a baby cowbird next 2 its nest “parent” and it was so much bigger!!!!! Which is the sort of thing that gets normal people upset about the injustice of nest parasitism but makes *me* worry if baby cowbirds get bird dysmorphia

image

This (from Cornell Labs via Merlin) is the pic I was looking at. It’s just a little baby but it’s so much bigger than its “parent”!!!! Do baby cowbirds feel isolated? Do they understand they’re a different bird, or are they just a really bad sparrow?

hey, good news! ecologists have been studying this very thing! it seems young cowbirds have some kind of innate sense that leads them to sneak out of their foster nest at night to hang out in grasslands where they—more often than not—meet other cowbirds and learn more about what they really are.

Thanks I am going to cry so hard I throw up ;-;

btw. your search for the most morally upright and ethical piece of media that has the most correct “representation” will destroy your ability to find the most profound and beautiful and human of stories. and may even destroy the stories themselves before they are created. if you even care.

Public announcement: if you have a Spaniard in your mutual circle, be extra nice to them today. We are having General Elections today and there is a chance that the mainstream right wing party wins. Which is already bad. But if that happens, the most probable scenario is the they would need the support of the literal-fascist party to form a government, which means the literal-fascists would get ministerial positions and power over certain parts of the Spanish society. Which after seeing what’s going on in Italy, it’s scary as fuck.

So yeah, saying you average Tumblr Spaniard is a bit anxious today is kind of an understatement.

so many social justicey arguments really do seem like they were invented in a lab to be a saw trap for people with obsessive compulsive tendencies

one of the examples i was thinking of is the idea you are Morally Obligated to tag any potential triggers, despite that being a category that theoretically includes literally everything. maybe the implication/way most people interpret it is “if you have a decent following, its best practice to tag common ones plus requests from followers” but i dont think it should be difficult to understand why trying to figure out which ones people will get mad at you about is a saw trap. esp on platforms more like twitter where providing content warnings in the first place is a logistical nightmare

please do not fall for staff claiming trans womens faces being labeled mature is a “bug” i have had nudes and cis women in lingerie blazed to me CONSTANTLY with zero content labels or warnings, clearly any labels being added to posts are done by people. that and any text posts criticizing staffs rampant terf and nazi problem being labeled mature as well. it is very blatant obvious transmisogyny on staffs end and theyre giving up a flimsy excuse to try and avoid liability on the legal end of things

I think it should also be mentioned how a simple kiss between two men warrants a mature label, while softcore pornography is fine if it’s a man and a woman.

The same happens to text posts. Mature labels gets pushed on mlm fics or ship discussions, even when they’re pretty tame. A man in lingerie, no matter how tasteful and artsy the picture is, warrants a mature label while even an integral nude of a woman is totally fine. Artworks in which literally nothing is happening (but like it’s not even suggestive) get a mature label just because the ship is mlm.

The message is clear as day: if it’s queer it’s VM18, put on the same level as porn.

no idea whats happening with artfight (kind of? i know a bit but… its given me a headache so im ignoring it) but i am just

going to go back to animating this revenge

something is up with artfight?

tl;dr staff mass quit bc they were not paid

what the fuck?

image

QUICK CORRECTION-

the mods are volunteers, they weren’t paid nor did they ask for pay

what they’re upset about is that Takaia is pocketing all the donation money rather than using it to update and improve the site, plus a lack of communication on getting things done yet refusing to let more mods/staff pitch in, so they’re quitting as protest.

the moderators want the event to keep going for the sake of the participants, but ArtFight’s future is dubious unless Takaia cleans up their act.

Okay wait this brings up a point Dr. Richard D Wolff (americas leading Marxist economist) brought up in a lecture a while ago; economics needs an ethics review board.

Every other major discipline has an ethics review board. If you’re a doctor and prescribe a patient a lethal dose of the wrong medicine, you get disciplined. If you’re a biologist and commit animal cruelty, you get disciplined. If you’re a psychologist and conduct an unethical study, you get disciplined. If you’re an engineer and neglect safety standards when building a bridge, you get disciplined.

But if you’re an economist and your policies actively harm people in a demonstrable way, nothing happens. It’s all just a ‘matter of opinion’

American and other western economists advised the Russian government on how to run the country following the end of the ussr and its estimated that the economic policies they recommended directly lead to the deaths of millions of people. And not a single economist so much as even lost their job.

Economics degrees also need courses on ethics and the real human impact of economic policies so that economists can learn how to avoid harm in the first place.

Recently, one of the most famous US economists posted a tweet sternly chiding the “hysteria” people were fostering in falsely claiming that inflation was bad in the United States. He included a graph that showed that in fact, prices for most things was down!

Except for groceries and utilities. The things that people actually need for even basic survival.

He did not seem to even understand that there could be any dissonance in his statement.

At best, economists get so caught up in numbers that they lose sight of the human costs of everything involved. At worst, and indeed frequently, they actively contribute to making things worse for the people already at the biggest disadvantages.

This seems reasonable and very kind to me. Definitely wish more people cared about the danger noodles.

FINALLY I have an excuse to share this gem of a video!
